Some stories seem to be untouchable due to the tension and secrecy around them. We can only dance around the cave entrance, trying to peer inside. Fredy Hirsch’s life is one of those stories, covered with several layers of untouchability. It’s a story of a coach and teacher of children in inhuman conditions, a Jew in a concentration camp, a homosexual in totalitarianism. How can one maintain self-respect in a totalitarian prison?
