Lecture/Workshop by Daniel Soukup and Kamila Cmolová
The Kurt and Ursula Schubert Centre for Jewish Studies, in collaboration with the Jewish Community of Brno, examines so-called memory traces (ownership notes, signatures, drawings, ex libris, stamps, marginal notes, inserted slips or bookmarks) found in books that were mostly confiscated from their Jewish owners during Nazi persecution. The lecture/workshop will present partial results of research on a fraction of books from the collection "Library of Stolen Hopes," which includes approximately 100 titles that can be linked by provenance marks to the pre-war Jewish community in Moravia. These books are often the only tangible evidence of the stories, family memories, and lives of specific individuals who fell victim to the Holocaust.
