In her work My Search for Otto Eisler, Anne Newman recounts a deeply personal and scholarly journey that took her across continents in an effort to explore the life and work of the prominent Czech Jewish architect. Her interest in Eisler began in 2012, when she discovered that her grandparents’ apartment building in Brno, constructed in 1937, was designed by Eisler and represents a remarkable example of interwar Brno modernism. Fascinated by this revelation, she began to uncover the dramatic story of the architect’s life before, during, and after World War II – including the time he spent in hiding as a persecuted Jew. Her search not only sheds new light on Eisler’s fate but also provides deeper insights into the lives of her own ancestors and the crucial choices they made in those turbulent times – just as Otto Eisler did.
The event will be held in English with translation into Czech.
